Urban League and Lutheran Senior Services Receive Federal Certification to Offer Paid Apprenticeships

St. Louis, MO, March 5, 2019 — The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis and Lutheran Senior Services today received certification to offer federally recognized paid apprenticeship programs for the positions of Head Start Teacher’s Aide Apprentice and Certified Nursing Assistant Apprentice.

“These paid positions will now offer skilled job opportunities to those who otherwise could not have afforded to attend college to obtain these certifications on their own,” said Michael P. McMillan, president and CEO of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc.

The Head Start Teacher’s Aide Apprenticeship program is the only certified program of its kind in the State of Missouri. Candidates for the Apprenticeship program will receive 2 years of paid on-the-job training and professional development. After the successful completion of the apprenticeship, teachers will receive a national Child Development Associate Certificate, a Department of Labor Apprenticeship Certificate and a raise.

Eligible candidates must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and pass a criminal background check upon acceptance into the program. For more information regarding the Head Start Teacher’s Aide Apprenticeship program, contact Keesha Strong, Vice President of Human Resources at (314) 506-5395.

At Lutheran Senior Services, Certified Nursing Assistants are in high demand across the organization that serves more than 11,000 older adults, providing basic nursing care services at nine Life Plan Communities and Home & Community Based Services.  To help fill this demand, in 2016, the organization helped sponsor the creation of the CNA Training Academy to offer training for existing employees of the Senior Care Network, an alliance of eleven long term care organizations including Lutheran Senior Services.  In 2017, LSS began offering CNA training to interested candidates from outside the organization at their own cost.

“The Registered Apprenticeship program will help offset most of our cost of training these individuals,” said John Kotovsky, Chief Executive Officer at LSS.  “The Apprenticeship program adds even more value for our students through a nationally recognized Certificate of Apprenticeship that they receive upon completion of their training. This represents an important milestone in achieving improved skills and competencies that can boost their career advancement opportunities.  This is a win-win partnership, and we look forward to working with the Urban League and the U.S. Department of Labor as we serve the needs of older adults in our community.”
