Urban League & Better Family Life Open Save Our Sons Community Outreach Center in St. Louis City on MLK Day

On Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis and Better Family Life, Inc. will host the opening of the Save Our Sons / Better Family Life Community Outreach Center on 1330 Aubert, St. Louis, MO  63113 at 2:00 p.m. This strategic alliance represents one of the first major collaborations between Better Family Life and the Urban League to address Chief John Hayden’s Anti-Crime Initiative in the City of St. Louis.

The Urban League Save Our Sons program seeks to help economically-disadvantaged African American and other men living in the St. Louis metropolitan community find jobs and have the opportunity to earn livable wages.  This program completes these objectives by assisting the participants in obtaining post-secondary education and job skills training and teaching the imperative career-skills and work ethic necessary to become successful employees while entering today’s workforce. Founded in 2015, Save Our Sons has helped more than 500 men find jobs.

The Better Family Life, Community Outreach Department will implement the Neighborhood Alliance in the Hayden’s Rectangle, dividing the handprint into 4 zones. Neighborhood engagement activities will align to increase resource delivery to families.  Families will benefit from neighborhood based case management. Targeted Neighborhood activities include; The Pulpit to Porches, St. Louis Metropolitan Area Amnesty Program, Operation Clean Sweep, Open Air Drug Market Engagement, Beyond the Walls Mural Project,

Tandy Recreation Center program expansion, 3 Neighborhood Trauma Centers, the “We Will Stop Killing Each Other” Campaign, the St. Louis Metropolitan Areas Gun Violence De-Escalation Centers, and a Senior Citizen Registry.   BFL will also coordinate the Federation of Block Units in each zone.

The overarching goal of the Neighborhood Alliance is to engage, and resource families in socially and economically challenged neighborhoods in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. The Neighborhood Alliance Model is continuing to demonstrate great promise in crime reduction within 8 of the highest crime neighborhoods as reported through the Uniform Crime Report. The Neighborhood Alliance Model deploys Outreach Specialists who go door-to-door in St. Louis’ most challenged neighborhoods conducting household assessments and connecting residents to needed resources. The Neighborhood Alliance also provides neighborhood based case management. The Community Outreach Specialists build relationships with residents that allow us to listen to resident concerns and build neighborhood profile which are then used to identify the specific resources required to move the neighborhood forward and make neighborhoods more livable.

Better Family Life, Inc.’s mission is to plan and establish social, cultural, artistic, youth, economic, housing and educational programs that help to promote positive and innovative changes within the St. Louis metropolitan area.

The mission of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is to empower African Americans and others throughout the region to secure economic self-reliance, social equality and civil rights.
