Urban League Celebrates Street Dedication of ‘Urban League Square’

ST. LOUIS –

In recognition of its 100th Anniversary, the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis hosted an Honorary Street Dedication of Urban League Square. The event featured remarks from Mayor Lyda Krewson, St. Louis Aldermanic President Lewis Reed, St. Louis City Alderwoman Marlene Davis, State Senator Jamilah Nasheed, State Representative Michael Butler and Jo Middleton, from Senator Claire McCaskill’s Office. World Renowned R&B Singer Peabo Bryson made a surprise visit to the event to speak with members of the Urban League Save Our Sons program and bring remarks at the Street Dedication.

The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc. celebrates a Century of Service to the St. Louis community in 2018. Started as a result of the East St. Louis race riots during a time of domestic and foreign conflict in 1918, the League was established with the purpose of diffusing racial tensions, stabilizing communities and improving conditions for African Americans in St. Louis. The mission of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, Inc. is to empower African Americans and others throughout the region in securing economic self-reliance, social equality and civil rights.
