Head Start is a national program that provides child development services to  low income children and families.
  • Head Start is a locally operated federally funded program that provides Early Childhood Education services for low income children and families. A special focus is placed on school readiness (literacy and math skills). In addition to early childhood education other services provided by the Urban League Head Start include:
    • Safe, nurturing and family-friendly environment
    • Research-based curriculum geared at ensuring every child enters kindergarten ready to succeed
      Creative Curriculum, 5th Edition)
    • Degreed teachers in Early Childhood Education and/or Child Development
    • Comprehensive services including:  health and dental exams, nutrition assessments, disability and mental health services, sensory and developmental screenings and an array of supportive services provided in-house and by partnering community agencies
    • Eight conveniently located centers along major bus routes
    • Opportunities for multi-generational family involvement
    • Nutritious meals
    • Diversity appreciation and support of varied abilities
    • The Urban League Head Start Program has been recognized as a Missouri Eat Smart Child Care by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services-Bureau of Community Food and Nutrition Assistance.
    • ​The Urban League Head Start Program:
    • Serves 931 children ages 6 weeks to 5 years
    • Provides center-based operations from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
    • ​Families must meet the federal income guidelines
​Eligibility:
The following documents are needed for enrollment:
  • Child’s Birth Certificate
  • Child’s Up-to-Date Immunization/Shot Record or Health Department Issued Exemption Card
  • Child’s Health Insurance or Medicaid Card
  • Child’s Up-to-Date Physical (Including HGB, Lead & TB)
  • Child’s Up-to-Date Dental Exam
  • Parent/Guardian Photo I.D.
  • Proof of Income for the last 12 months (i.e.: W-2 or 1040, TANF Letter, Child Subsidy Letter, Unemployment Letter of SSI Award Letter)
  • Full Day Verification (Employer/School/Training)
